Celebrating National Indigenous History Month
June is National Indigenous History Month where we recognize the history, heritage, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada.
What is national indigenous history month?
June is National Indigenous History Month where all Canadians (indigenous, non-indigenous, and newcomers) reflect and learn of the unique heritage, history, diverse cultures, sacrifices, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. June also includes a number of significant days in the recognition and honoring of Indigenous peoples and Canadian history.
Tuesday, June 2 marked the 6th anniversary of the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Final Report and Calls to Action in 2015, making it an ideal time to reflect on how Canada has responded to the Calls to Action.
Sunday, June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day (formerly known as National Aboriginal Day), which has been recognized on the summer solstice since 1996. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day, due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
Ridgeline is thankful to be working with a number of Indigenous communities and values our strong relations. It is indeed a privilege to be operating within the traditional territories of our Indigenous people.
How are you celebrating?
Most of us usually think of attending an event or visit a historical site. Do it safely, respecting all mandatory public health restrictions. However, there are also many virtual events one can attend or do. We are pleased to share a list:
PowWows are joyous and beautiful expressions of culture meant to uplift people after the winter. Check your local community for dates and times.
Podcast. For example, The Disappearance of Natasha Lynn Starr
Celebrate by reading a book by one of the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit authors.
The National Film Board, indigenous peoples in Canada.
Listening to some indigenous music.
Immerse yourself in authentic Indigenous food & beverage or attempting Indigenous cuisine.
So much to learn. However you choose to celebrate National Indigenous History Month, Ridgeline Canada wishes you all happiness and fun.
